In October 2003, changes in European legislation mean that you can have your car serviced at any independent garage without invalidating your manufacturer’s warranty? This legislation is known as Block Exemption Regulations (BER).

Before BER it was very difficult to have cars, which were still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, serviced anywhere except a franchised dealer.

The Office of Fair Trading reports that the average service costs £199.00 at a typical franchised dealer, whereas the independent garage average is £116.00, without any apparent difference in quality.
